Choosing a niche in affiliate marketing is not an easy task. It can take hours or even days to find the niche that’s right for you. But when you do, you will be able to focus on building your online business around this niche and make money more efficiently and effectively.

What’s a niche in affiliate marketing?

A niche is a narrow segment of a broad market, a specialised topic or a field of interest. In affiliate marketing, it implies you promote affiliate products that are relevant and tailored to the needs of this targeted group of customers.

Niche markets are usually smaller than the broad markets, meaning there is less competition, and it’s easier for niche businesses to differentiate themselves from the crowd.

An example of a niche (canoeing in rivers) is:
Outdoor → Outdoor sports → Canoeing → Canoeing in rivers

There are many factors to consider when choosing a niche in affiliate marketing. Still, the most important ones are your interests, skills, solutions to problems, and the availability and demand of products in that particular niche.

These are the few important factors that you need to consider when searching for your niche.

Start with your hobby or something you are passionate about

If you’re passionate about something, it’s best to focus on it and develop your expertise. You can then leverage this knowledge when you create your own business.

Knowing the market beforehand makes finding and attracting an audience/customer base easier. You can appeal to their preferences in a way that differentiates your business from others.

For example, you are generally interested in outdoor sports, particularly canoeing on the river. You may share your experience and knowledge with people in these groups. As you are familiar with the subject, it’s much easier to identify the accessories needed for this hobby, for example, outdoor gear. You can then incorporate it into your marketing strategy.

Though you must stay passionate about your work, it isn’t always lucrative. To be successful, research viable business ideas and find the one that could be fulfilling and profitable.

Are there topics for me to write content for years to come?

People often think that building a website only involves adding a couple of pages, and it’s done. No way! Sites need to be updated regularly with new posts and information to keep your audience’s interest high. Your site is similar to cars that need weekly refuelling for gas and regular maintenance for performance.

The type of content you decide to create is a very important decision. Try to choose a topic with variety so that you never run out of things to say on this subject. It also helps if there are enough people interested in the topic that your content will enjoy a wide audience. Your niche website will be your platform to interact with your audience.

Are people looking for solutions in my niche?

The thought of going for a niche that interests you makes sense, but it’s not always a good idea. Making sure the market is lucrative and has potential will help you grow more effectively.

You should also consider if people are actively looking for this niche on Google to solve a problem. I could start a website about my love for dinosaurs, but it wouldn’t be very profitable because it’s not solving any major problems.

If I start a website about growing healthier hair, that will attract people actively looking for advice and products on this topic. Your topic should ideally have traction in the market and solve a problem or improve someone’s well-being.

Are people willing to spend money in my niche?

Always remember, at the end of the day, you want to make money with your site. If you target niche people searching for products and services they’re willing to pay for, then this is an excellent way to achieve that goal.

Going back to the growing healthier hair niche, people are willing and ready to spend money to buy products to help them. They are actively searching on Google for product reviews and solutions, which is the buyers’ intent.

When choosing your niche, consider whether your target audience is willing to spend money on solutions. Are there products you can confidently recommend and produce quality reviews for? If not, this niche is unlikely to make you any money, even if it meets the other requirements I mentioned.

There’s no need to rush picking a niche. It doesn’t speed up cash generation and won’t happen overnight. However, you will still take time to find a place that can set you up for success in the long term.

Analyse the problems you can solve

Every niche has an opportunity to create a problem statement and solve it.

Think of users looking for a solution, such as growing healthier hair. If you can find the right solution to this issue, there’s potential to earn a lot of online cash.

Analyse the market demand

The market demand for the niche you enter should be high due to its increasing popularity. Demand will either be constant or on an upward trend, so there is no need to worry about an uncertain future.

The best examples I’ve seen are health, making money online and finance. These are evergreen niches that people will always need info on and great products in. No matter how long it takes for these industries to go ‘out of style, people will still want advice and information so that the demand won’t go away anytime soon.

You can go online and use a Google Trends tool to analyse the market demand and trends.

Analyse competition

No matter what niche you’re going into, competition is always a factor and that is something to keep in mind as you are starting up. The less competition there is, the more opportunities there will be for you to generate more sales.

When you’re going for niches that are in high demand (as mentioned above), the competition will also be high. How do you find low competition niches in high demand niches?

The key to success is to go deep and target a very narrow niche. For example, instead of going for improve your health/fitness niche, go for a narrow niche such as ‘‘improving stamina for men above 50’’. In this way, you target a niche that’s in high demand, yet low in competition.

Analyse the income potential

This is simple logic: we want to earn a profit from our blog and niche websites. Finding the right subject for your online blog or niche site would be best. Your niche should be one that can provide good returns in the long run.

You can use your competitors’ sites such as Amazon, eBay and others to find out what kind of products customers are looking for and how much commission they produce on average. This will then help you in ranking the income potential of any niche.

Analyse current and past trends

Always start by researching the trends before jumping into any niche.
The process is very simple.

Go to https://trends.google.com/trends/ and just type your niche. For example, I searched for the word “gardening”.

Focus on the stability of your niche. It should not be seasonal.

Identify affiliate products for promotion

As a business owner, you must wonder if there are enough products to sell from the affiliate sites, and the answer should be a definite ‘yes’.

You can search Amazon’s Bestseller’s page to brainstorm some good product ideas. Just enter your niche and break into sub-niches to see what popular products are in your niche that you could promote.

Check out online advertisements

Companies invest a lot in advertisements to dominate the market in their niche. Online advertisements can be seen as an indication of a big market.

It is common for websites to have a banner on their homepage that advertises the latest topics or products. If you see an advertisement consistently popping up whilst researching – this might indicate that it could be worth checking out.

Affinity and association

Strong affinity/association with your target audience is a must for success in your business and prospects.

You can find really popular niches using the Facebook Audience Insights tool.

What’s MLM?

The Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is also known as Network or Referral Marketing.

It’s a business model that sells its products or services through a pyramid-shaped commission system by its non-salaried workforce or distributors.

The typical characteristics of a MLM company are:

  • There is an upline-downline relationships between its distributors within the multi-level system. The upline is the sponsor or recruiter of other distributors (the downlines).
  • The distributors are independent and non-salaried. Their income is based on the sales of the products and a percentage of the sales from their downlines team.
  • A start-up cost upon joining. Every distributor has to commit to a fixed sum every month to purchase the products in order to earn the commission from the sales made by his downlines.
  • The company will create a complicated compensation scheme for commissions.
  • Through this multi-level marketing network, a company can build up a large customer base with very low cost.

How MLM works?

MLM is a sales team with multi-layers of sales force (distributors) in a pyramid shaped structure to promote a company’s products or services. When you join the team, you become one of the distributors.

All distributors are independent and non-salaried. There are two main sources of income for all the distributors: From the direct sales of the company’s products/services and commissions from the sales made by their downlines (distributors recruited).

The typical structure of a MLM company is as shown here.

The MLM company does not pay its distributor for the recruitment of new distributors (their downlines). However, the company will compensate its distributors with commission, usually a fraction of the sales made by his downlines. This compensation scheme motivates those distributors with large downlines teams to continually grow and expand their downlines teams to generate more sales for larger commissions.

The MLM model allows a company to employ large teams of sales force and expand rapidly to build a large customer base at a very low cost within a short period.

MLM and Pyramid Scheme: what’s the difference?

I’m sure you have also heard of a ‘Pyramid Scheme’ with a very similar organisation structure as MLM.

So, what’s the difference between the MLM and a Pyramid Scheme? The main difference between is that MLM is a legal business whereas Pyramid Scheme is illegal.

How do we differentiate the two?

A Pyramid Scheme is where the only way a member makes money is by recruitment of new members. The company usually convince his participants that it owns an investment project or a valuable product. The company also promise its members they will receive ‘payment’ by recruiting new participants. The existing members will eventually drag others into this fraudulent scheme.

MLM, on the other hand, has real and legitimate products or services for promotion by its distributors. The recruitment of new members (distributors) is to build the downlines sales team to further promote the products or services.

You should be wary of companies that claimed to be MLM but are actually Pyramid Scheme in disguise. It’s always advisable to independently research the company before joining.

What’s affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is simply “getting paid for recommending products or services to other people’’. It’s all the activities you perform to promote other people’s products or services to earn commissions.

You may be asking: Isn’t it the same as MLM where you also promote a company’s products or services?

The two marketing models look similar but affiliate marketing has an entirely different approach as illustrated in the diagram below. 

This is how affiliate marketing works:

  • You create the niche website of your choice (your passions, hobbies or areas where you have some specialised knowledge).
  • You create relevant content and include in your content the promotion of products of your choice. These products can be from different companies or suppliers such as Amazon, Walmart, Taobao etc.,
  • Customers search for these products online and landed on your niche website to read your content and product recommendations. Finally, when they decide to purchase the product through your affiliate links, the company/supplier will pay you a commission.

There is no sponsor (upline) or downlines relationships in affiliate marketing and you are not a distributor to any company. You are free to choose products relevant to your niche from any company and promote them on your niche website. You add value with useful and relevant content about the products for the customers to make an informed buying decision.

What are the advantages of both MLM and affiliate marketing?

The advantages of both the MLM and affiliate marketing business are:

  • Potential to build passive income streams 
  • Potential to achieve financial freedom – the passive income streams allow you to leverage your time.
  • Starting at low risk with no prior experience – you can start by working part-time while keeping your full-time job.

Is there a downside to both MLM and affiliate marketing?

The downside of both MLM and affiliate marketing is what I called ‘work-for-free’ when you just started. You may spend weeks or even months working but receive very little or no income from your business. 

It’s definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme.

For those who aimed to reap huge benefits and enjoy passive income later, it could be right for you. First, understand the nature of the growth of the business which is exponential and then ‘work-for-free’ during the initial stage. 

As your website begins to gain traction with the increase in traffic (visitors), your income will increase exponentially. By then, you would have gained the relevant skills and experience to bring your business to the next level.

What are the differences between MLM and affiliate marketing?

Let’s find out the main differences between these two models.

#1 The freedom of choice of products and companies
The quality of products or services for a MLM company can determine the success or failure of its business. It’s the most important consideration before joining a MLM company. Usually, a MLM company promotes only products from a single product category. If the products are of inferior quality or if the company is in financial difficulties, then your business with this company is over.

In affiliate marketing, you have the freedom to select the niche, products an affiliate companies.

#2 – You do not own or handle the products
Unlike MLM business, you do not own or handle the products you are promoting. The affiliate company handles the delivery, enquiries or complaints from the customers after the delivery.

#3 – Start-up cost
Most MLM companies want you start with the purchase their products as the ‘starter kit’ with start-up cost varies from $100 to $1,000. You also require to maintain a minimum monthly purchase to qualify for the commissions.

In affiliate marketing business, you can start for free. The only cost you may incur is your domain name for your niche website at approximately $20 per year.

#4 – How you make money
Earning commission in affiliate marketing of is very straight forward and transparent but MLM usually has a complicated and confusing ‘compensation scheme’.

#5 – Recruitment
For MLM, you need to continually recruit new distributors (your downlines) to receive your commissions from the sales generated by your downlines. 

There is no recruitment In affiliate marketing. Your business is to ‘recommend’ suitable products to the potential buyers through your niche website that’s open to your ‘audience’ all over the world, 24 hours a day!

  • Freedom of choice of products and companies – The freedom to choose your niche and to promote products of your choice from different companies give you the flexibility to recommend the best products for your customers.
  • Start-up cost – No start-up cost is required. You can start building your online business at very low cost and low risk but still has the potential to build passive income streams further down the road.
  • How you make money – Earning of affiliate commission is very straight forward and transparent.
  • Recruitment – No face-to-face recruitment is needed. Your approach is to ‘recommend’ the best products available to your potential customers through your content on your online store (website) that opens 24/7.

I personally prefer work that can earn me passive income. Isn’t it cool to get paid multiple times for doing the work once?

Passion is defined as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.

If you have a purpose (for example, to start an online business) this passion will become the strong desire that gives you boundless energy, focus and the willpower to overcome even the most daunting obstacles. When you take steps to define your passion with a purpose, your passion will be your key to creativity, persistence and performance – the fire that lights your journey towards achieving your goals.

I believe everyone of us has passions. Our purpose here on earth is to discover our passions and turn them to our advantage to find fulfillment and joy in our lives.

While many of us do not believe that their passions can be turned into a business, the truth is, it takes only a few steps:

  • Identify your passion and decide on your niche;
  • Dream big but start small;
  • Get the relevant education and training;
  • Develop a plan and strategy;
  • Start building your niche website;
  • Seek guidance and support to overcome obstacles and reach your goals.

The steps are simple but the implementation requires commitment, perseverance and hard work.

In this article, I will share with you each of the step above to turn your passion into a thriving online business in affiliate marketing. In the process, you gain fulfillment and satisfaction along with monetary rewards, and may even transform your life!

Why it’s important to pursue your passion?

We will have a more positive outlook if pursue our passion in our daily lives and this translate into higher energy level and greater confidence. We’re not merely going through the motions but actively taking positive steps to create the success that we want.

Passion is the source of energy that fuels our success in life and in whatever we do. Your passion is the key to your creativity, persistence and performance. At the same time, we must also recognise that passion alone will not bring you success. However, if your passion can be backed by a purpose with hard work, persistence and perseverance, your achievements will only be limited by your imagination.

Passion generally comes before a purpose. Passion gets you started and a purpose is what keeps you going, especially in time of challenges and disappointment. When you are working on a task you are passionate about, you’ll be able to focus and get things done on time because those tasks will not feel like a burden to you.

Starting a business requires a lot of patience and effort – it does not happen overnight. Just don’t overlook this critical ingredient called ”passion”. The more passionate you are, the easier it’s for you to get started and turn your project into a viable business venture.

How to identify your passions?

Let’s get started by firstly identifying our passions by using the following as a guide.

  • Make a list of all the things that you love to do since childhood time.
  • Take inventory of your achievements – things that you did well, gained recognition at.
  • Acknowledge your talents and gifts – write them down and revisit them.
  • Explore your interests.
  • Volunteer your time and talent to activities that appeal to you.
  • Network with like-minded people.
  • Think of the problems that bother you and find a solution to solve them.

Your passion can be any activities that you enjoy or something that you do well and can perform easily. Some examples of passions are volunteering, creative arts, gaming, travel, making music, poems, writing, gardening etc.,

Once you have identified your passion(s), the next thing is to decide on the type business venture and get started.

Steps in building your online business in affiliate marketing:

Step 1: Decide on your niche
After you have identify your passion, the next thing is to decide on your niche.

A niche is a position of interest that that allows you to thrive in a particular environment. In affiliate marketing terminology, a niche refers to a narrow or specific topic within a significant industry

As an example, if your hobby and passion is in photography, then you may consider the Hobby industry. Some possible niches could be photography for children and pets, indoor portrait photography or travel photography.

Spend some time to research on the internet to understand and get a better picture of the industry that you wish to embark on, and the niches that are available in this industry. Some considerations include the market demand and availability of affiliate products on various marketing platforms, availability of clear business model that you can emulate, forums and discussion groups on social media that you can derive traffic (visitors) from etc.,

Step 2: Dream big but start small
Most people go through life with only small thoughts, small goals and small ambitions. Not surprisingly, they achieved little because the size of their success was limited by the size of their thinking and their dreams. Start by thinking bigger and you can start achieving larger goals.

I encourage you to think big but start with a small investment of your money and time. It’s important that you monitor and manage the amount of money invested into your business when you first started as it’s unlikely that you have income from your business at this stage.

Step 3: Education and Training
Education and training relevant to your business is one of the most important consideration before you decide on the business platform to use especially for beginners.
